Gangs Clash with Police in Port-au-Prince
Gangs controlling much of Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, launched an attack on Monday, engaging in clashes with police at the city center. Gunfire erupted in the area of Champ de Mars, a significant public park near the National Palace, the former presidential residence.
At least four police officers were wounded during the confrontation, as reported by the Miami Herald.
Situation in Haiti
Haiti has been facing political turmoil and violence following the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in 2021. With no sitting president or parliament, the country has been grappling with poverty, natural disasters, and ongoing gang violence for years.
Ongoing Unrest
Since late February, powerful gangs in Haiti have intensified their activities, targeting police stations, prisons, the airport, and the sea port. Their aim is to force Prime Minister Ariel Henry out of office. Despite Henry’s announcement of stepping down to pave the way for a transitional council, the formation of the council has faced delays and disagreements among political parties and stakeholders.
Humanitarian Crisis
Amidst the political uncertainty and gang violence, Haiti is experiencing a severe humanitarian crisis. Shortages of food, medicine, and other essential supplies are exacerbating the plight of the people.
People in Haiti are eagerly awaiting a resolution to the current crisis and hoping for stability and peace in the near future.
