Thai Prime Minister Pledges to Reduce Air Pollution in Chiang Mai

Thailand’s Prime Minister Addresses Air Pollution in Chiang Mai

Thailand’s Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin visited the tourism hotspot Chiang Mai, which has been experiencing severe air pollution, ranking among the world’s most polluted cities for two consecutive days.

Rose to the Occasion

During his visit, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin acknowledged the need to address the smog issue in Chiang Mai. He expressed concerns about the pollution levels and emphasized the government’s commitment to improving the livelihood of the people.

The picturesque historic city in Thailand’s north attracts numerous visitors but faces annual challenges with air quality, particularly during the early months of the year when farmers burn crops.

Government Action and Initiatives

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin’s visit to Chiang Mai included discussions with local authorities and visits to key centers focused on wildfire prevention and PM2.5 control. The government is working on regulations to address crop burning practices that contribute to the pollution issue.

Earlier this year, the Cabinet approved a Clean Air Act to combat air pollution in the country. Recent reports highlighted the significant impact of pollution-related diseases on the population, with over 10 million patients seeking treatment last year.

Public Figures’ Concerns

Ex-prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra and opposition lawmaker Pita Limjaroenrat also visited Chiang Mai during this time. Thaksin, in his first public appearance since his return from self-exile, emphasized the severity of the PM2.5 problem, labeling it as a major issue that needs urgent attention.
