UN Envoy Supports Call for Immediate Gaza Ceasefire Amid ‘Cataclysmic Suffering’

The UN Special Coordinator’s Plea for Humanitarian Ceasefire

The UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process issued a fervent plea for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire and release of all hostages, amid “cataclysmic” suffering in the Gaza Strip and continuing violence in the occupied West Bank.

Security Council Resolution and Ongoing Hostilities

The call by Special Coordinator Tor Wennesland followed the Security Council’s adoption of a resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages. However, intense hostilities between Israeli forces and Hamas fighters continue, with reports of casualties, including children.

Scale of Death and Suffering

Special Coordinator Wennesland expressed shock at the immense scale of death, destruction, and suffering caused by Israel’s military campaign in Gaza. He emphasized the need to address the life-threatening conditions faced by internally displaced persons in Gaza.

Protecting Humanitarians and Addressing Famine

With concerns of an imminent famine and horrifying suffering in Gaza, Mr. Wennesland called on Israel to fulfill its obligations under international law. He stressed the importance of facilitating humanitarian access and protecting aid workers in the region.

Concerns in the West Bank

Turning attention to the occupied West Bank, Mr. Wennesland expressed deep concern over continued violence and casualties. He urged Israeli security forces to exercise restraint and emphasized the importance of upholding the status quo at Holy Sites in Jerusalem.

Expansion of Israeli Settlements and Two-State Solution

Mr. Wennesland raised alarm over the expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank and called for international support to the Palestinian Authority. He reiterated the need for a political solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, emphasizing the establishment of a two-State solution based on UN resolutions and international law.
