UN Mission Announces Airbridge to Aid Relief in Haiti Crisis

Humanitarian Crisis in Haiti

Out-of-control gang violence has created a humanitarian crisis in Haiti, prompting the UN to take action to alleviate the situation.

UN Airbridge Initiative

The UN Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH) has announced the creation of an airbridge with the neighboring Dominican Republic to transport aid and ensure the safe relocation of staff.

Current Situation

Relief agencies are deeply concerned about the welfare of civilians reliant on aid, with more than 400 incidents hampering access recorded across the country since the start of 2024.

Displacement and Aid Efforts

According to the UN migration agency, IOM, 362,000 people are displaced in Haiti, with 15,000 newly homeless in Port-au-Prince. The UN World Food Programme (WFP) has delivered 75,000 meals to those affected by the violence.

Humanitarian Appeal

Despite almost half of the population needing humanitarian aid, the UN’s 2024 humanitarian appeal for $674 million is funded at just 3.2%, posing a significant challenge to emergency response efforts.

Funding Shortages

Funding shortages are threatening aid operations on the ground, with WFP at risk of halting food distribution due to lack of funds. Immediate funding of at least $10 million is required to sustain emergency assistance.

UN’s Response

Flights from the Dominican Republic are being planned to deliver aid and evacuate non-essential UN employees. The UN presence in Haiti is undergoing a reconfiguration to enhance crisis coordination and support efforts to address the security crisis.
