UP Honors Late Players Yoro and Rogie Following UAAP Football Title Victory

UP Fighting Maroons Journey to Victory

When the UP Fighting Maroons reclaimed the UAAP men’s football crown after six years, they made sure to remember those who helped their journey back to the top. The Maroons paid tribute to two late players, Yoro Sangare and Rogie Maglinas, and a recently departed professor as they dethroned the FEU Tamaraws, 1-0, in the Season 86 finals.

Honoring Fallen Heroes

UP head coach Popoy Clarino mentioned that part of their motivation heading into the playoffs was to honor their “fallen brothers.” Sangare and Maglinas were remembered for their contributions to the team, with Sangare passing away last year and Maglinas in 2016.

Tribute to a Beloved Professor

The Maroons also paid tribute to Monaliza Adviento-Maghanoy, a beloved professor in the UP College of Human Kinetics who passed away recently. Adviento-Maghanoy was a source of support for the team throughout the year.

Victory and Team Spirit

Francis Tacardon, named this season’s Most Valuable Player and Best Striker, highlighted the team’s fighting spirit that propelled them to victory. The team dedicated their win to their fallen teammates and the country.

Match Highlights

UP team captain Marc Tobias scored the winning goal at the 50th minute after a crucial penalty kick. Despite challenges and controversial calls during the game, the Maroons held on to secure their first men’s football championship since 2018.

Second-Half Action

As the second half unfolded, UP displayed aggressive gameplay and dominated possession. Several close attempts were made by both teams, with UP ultimately emerging victorious with a solid defensive performance.

Final Moments

FEU defender Mel Baylon had a late chance to equalize, but his header narrowly missed the target. The Maroons’ resilience and teamwork paid off as they secured the championship title.
