Youth Voices in Haiti: “Our Tears Are Dry, We Are Exhausted”

Youth Activist in Haiti Describes Challenges Faced

A youth activist in Haiti has described how years of gang violence, kidnappings, and insecurity in the country’s capital, Port-au-Prince, has forced their “tears to run dry”.

Security Situation in Haiti

The security situation has worsened in Haiti, with over 2,500 people killed or injured due to gang violence in the first three months of 2024, according to the United Nations mission in the country, BINUH.

Impact on the Population

Banditry, prostitution, and kidnapping have become major issues in Haiti, affecting the lives of its people across various sectors such as entrepreneurs, artists, students, and traders.

14-year-old children are being forced into prostitution, and the country is facing rising levels of misery, death, squalor, and unemployment.

Living in Cité Soleil

Despite the challenges, the youth activist continues to live in the Cité Soleil neighborhood, known for its hardships and violence. The resilience of the community is highlighted as a means of survival.

Community Work

The activist is involved in a community organization that supports young people affected by gang violence. Through group activities, they aim to reduce juvenile delinquency and provide support to those in need.

Despite the risks involved, the activist is dedicated to motivating and supporting other young individuals in the community.

Call for International Exchange

The activist expresses a desire to connect with youth from other countries to exchange ideas and understand how different communities tackle challenges such as climate change, technology, and sustainable development.

Programme Support

The community organization is part of a program called Semans Lapè (seeds of peace), managed by Concern Worldwide and funded by the UN Peacebuilding Fund. The program aligns with the UN’s youth, peace, and security agenda, emphasizing the importance of youth participation in peace and security initiatives.
